  • It's better every year! Sermons are good but stick around for the classes and the conversations.

  • I regularly attend the Public Affairs Forum. Every Sunday at noon, for over 50 years. This is a secular event

  • Just read the review two weeks previous to this one. I was looking up service times as I am an occasional, but not frequent, participant in services. I am also new to Austin, having moved here three months ago in November of 2014. I experienced some of what John described, but I also found that the women I went out of my way to talk to, especially the senior minister, membership coordinator, and social activism coordinator, were quite happy to engage in lengthy conversations. (I talked with some men as well, but not in an official capacity.) For many of us, our default is to be reserved. That may be what was happening the Sunday that John visited. Neither he nor others made the first step to reach out a hand in friendship. Ideally, there would be someone to spot and welcome visitors, but I also recognize that I have some responsibility in that process. I am not a member of this congregation and have no bias in favor of or against them. I am just describing my experience, which was mostly positive. My choice to not participate more fully has little to do with anything I experienced or didn't experience while visiting. It has more to do with what is going on in my personal life and my interest in other spiritual traditions, such as Zen Buddhism, which offer services at competing times.

  • Been at almost every service for about a year. Meg, Mari and Chris all deliver amazing and important messages. The musicians are mind-blowingly talented, the sermons are clever and empowering and they have a really awesome volunteer staff that really cares. Going to this church helps me see from different views, while other times it enforces some of my own thoughts I've had. Get there early enough and you might be able to get yourself a delicious taco.

  • It's Unitarian, which means the divine is one, and Universalist, meaning no one goes to hell. Friendly, great music, insightful and funny preaching. You get to light a candle during the service if you want to. There is no creed, no list of things you must believe. There are seven principles they agree to -- things like the worth and dignity of every person, the democratic process, free search for truth and meaning.
This is a church for intelligent people who are open minded and open hearted. Child care and children's classes are provided. Wednesday night suppers and classes starting at 6 pm. Casual dress. UUism is a combination of Christian ethics, Transcendentalist thought, world religions, justice making, earth-centered religion, Humanist thought and respect for nature.
